I-2. Describe and show pictures of a literacy-rich environment.

A literary-rich environment should include a classroom library. Books for all levels should be available to the students so they have several reading options without having to go to the library. A 3rd grade classroom should have books that are on level, below level, and above level on the shelf. The teacher should always encourage the students to read and write when there is free time. Students should also be encouraged to share what they have read or written with others. If needed, the teacher can initiate the conversation by asking students to tell her what the book was about and why it was interesting. Some additional resources such as writing prompts can also be used if students need help generating ideas.

Bulletin boards should also be posted to showcase student work. It is encouraging for the student to see his/her work posted for everyone to see. Writing assignments that are on bulletin boards can also be inspirational for other students who are not sure what to write about.

Colorful and informative items should also be posted around the classroom. Posters on the writing process can be helpful to students when completing an assignment. Information on punctuation and literary terms can also be useful especially when there are examples given with each one.
