Conic Application Practice

Circle, Ellipse, Hyperbola 1. A satellite in a stationary orbit rotates once each day about the Earth. Assume the satellite is 22,300 miles above the surface of the Earth and the Earths radius is 3,960 miles. Write an equation that represents the orbit of the satellite using the center of Earth as the origin.

2. Vibrations from an earthquake were noticeable 120 miles away from the epicenter. The center of the closest city to the earthquakes epicenter is 85 miles east and 90 miles south of the epicenter. If Michael was 15 miles west of this city, could he have felt the earthquake?

3. Find the standard equation of Mars orbit around the sun. Assume Mars minimum distance from the Sun is 129.5 million miles and its maximum distance from the Sun is 154.4 million miles. The Sun represents a focus of the ellipse.

4. In the whispering gallery of the Capital Building, we have a semi-ellipse.

Suppose the distance between the foci is 38.5 feet and the maximum height of the ceiling above ear level is 37 feet. Find the equation of the ellipse, assuming the center is the origin.

5. The Moons apogee (farthest distance from Earth) is 252,710 miles, and its

perigee (closest distance from Earth) are 221,463 miles. Assuming the Moons orbit of the Earth is elliptical with the Earth at one focus, find the standard form of the equation of Mars orbit.

6. Ellipses are used to destroy kidney stones. A patient could try and pass the stone or have it destroyed underwater. A lithotripter emits underwater ultrahigh frequency shock waves from one focus, with the patients kidney carefully positioned at the other focus. (The tub is an ellipse, the UHF at one Focus, and person at the other.) For an ellipse that generates the ellipsoid of a lithotripter, the major axis is 16 units long. One endpoint of the minor axis is (0, 3.5). Find the coordinates of the foci of the kidney stone, assuming the center is (0, 0).

7. Two men are standing 1,000 meters apart. One hears an explosion. The other man hears the same noise 1.5 seconds later. Assuming sound travels at 340 meters/second (in air), find the equation of the hyperbola that could contain the explosion site. Assume the men are at (-500, 0) and (500, 0).
