HYDRAULIC RAM

HYDRAULIC JACK
Hydraulic jack is a device used to lift heavy load through smaller height by the application of a much smaller force . USES: Mostly for lifting the automobiles for reparing and cleaning works.

Principle: Based on Pascal`s law

CONSTRUCTION

WORKING

Let

A = Cross-sectional area of the ram a = Cross-sectional area of the plunger p = Intensity of pressure produced by the plunger F = Force (effort) applied on the plunger W = Load Lifted on the ram Now p = F/a and also p= W/A F/a = W/A W/F = A/a Since A > a Hence W/F > 1 i.e mechanical advantage is greater than 1, i. e more load can be lifted by applying smaller effort
The effort applied on the plunger can be increased by using a lever in which leverage is obtained. Velocity Ratio = Distance moved by effort Distance moved by ram = Area of ram * Leverage Area of plunger Mechanical Advantage = W/P Where P= Force applied at the end of the handle Efficiency = mechanical advantage Velocity ratio
