• It is a fire safety provisions for all all self-propelled ocean-

going cargo vessels of 500gross tonnage and above and


specific measures for passenger ships, cargo ships and
tankers.
• Attention is directed to the appropriate governmental
authority in each case, as there may be additional
requirements, depending on the size, type and intended
service of the vessels.
• Consideration will be given to fire-extinguishing systems
that comply with the published requirements of the
governmental authority of the country whose flag the
vessel is entitled to fly as an alternative or addition to the
requirements of this section.
• Machinery Spaces of Category A (1
July 2002)
Machinery Spaces of Category A are
those spaces and trunks to such spaces
which contain either:
– i) internal combustion machinery used for
main propulsion;
– ii) internal combustion machinery used for
purposes other than main propulsion where
such machinery has in the aggregate a total
power output of not less than 375 kW (500
hp);
– iii) any oil-fired boiler or oil fuel unit, or any
oil-fired equipment other than boiler, such
as inert gas generator, incinerator, waste
disposal units, etc.
– Natural ventilation shall be provided in
enclosed cargo spaces intended for the
carriage of solid dangerous goods in
bulk, where there is no provision for
mechanical ventilation."
