Magazines: The Contents Page

Contents part one: features

Your contents will be split into two main sections - features (which only appear in one particular issue) and regulars (the items that appear in each issue, e.g. reviews section, letters page, club listings). Your features section still needs to be selling your magazine - think of it as a more detailed front cover. You need to decide if you are going to focus upon one main artist or if you are going to feature a number of them equally. Also you need to start giving more details about the content of your articles in this section, but you do not want to reveal everything about them here. Quotes are often good to use here.

Contents part two: regulars

Come up with a series of regular features that will appear in your magazine that relate directly to your musical genre. Use ones that are common and essential (e.g. reviews), but also try to think of any new ones that you could include that will make your magazine stand out (e.g. Smash Hits printing of song lyrics is a good example of this). Come up with a name for each of these features that will appeal to your target audience (e.g. Mixmag calls its reviews section tunes, which is a word commonly used by its target audience to describe the music that they listen to). You also need to make your regular section seem like essential reading not just a series of repetitive reviews. How are you going to do this?
