1 What is Matter
Mass and Weight
I can...
I can contrast mass and weight. I can measure the mass and volume of an object and calculate its density.
Mass
all matter has mass mass is the amount of matter in an object how much "stuff" something is made of the amount of mass something has is the same anywhere in the universe you are always made of the same "stuff" no matter where you go mass only changes when the amount of matter changes how can you change your mass?
Measuring Mass
measured with a balance - triple beam balance units are grams(g)/kilograms(kg) check out this animation http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=gch202
Weight
Weight is not the same as mass weight is the measure of gravitational force on an object 2 things will affect weight mass of the object more mass means more weight more mass, the harder Earth's gravity pulls to keep from flying away distance from another object (Earth) the further you are from Earth, the less its gravity can pull you
Measuring Weight
Weight is the measure of gravitational force. Weight isn't measuring you, but gravity pulling on you. the unit for weight is the newton (N) use a scale to measure weight Calculating weight 1 N is about equal to 100 g on Earth if you know the mass of the object, divide by 100 for the N (for Earth weight only) example - object has a mass of 230 g, so weight is 2.3 N
weight
measures gravitational force on an object weight changes due to location compared to other large objects (Earth, other planets, etc.) measured with a scale units are newtons (N)
