ATTACHMENT TO EASTERN ORTHODOXY IN TERMS OF

STATISTICS: SOCIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT OF CHURCHISM
Summary
In this paper the author tries to analyze religiousness and attachment to Eastern
Orthodoxy and the Orthodox Church taking into account statistical information from
numerous public opinion studies and sociological research studies in Serbia and Russia.
Before presenting the information, the author discusses possibilites and limitations of
sociological, quantitative and investigative approaches to the phenomenon of religion,
and then reveals a great number of statistical information on different aspects of attachment

154
to religion and church. The information may be divided into three groups: information
regarding self-identification with religion and church, information on believes into the
dogmatic core of the Eastern Orthodoxy, and finally, information on the churchism among
the population. In the closing part of the text, based on the empirical evidence, the
author does a cross-section of attachment of Serbia and Russias populations to Eastern
Orthodoxy and Serbian and Russian Orthodox churches.
Key words:

attachment to religion and church, sociological empirical research,

quantitative approach, sociological indicators of religiosity, Serbian
Orthodox Church, Russian Orthodox Church
