Romes basic problem was all the day laborers and all the money was funneled into one place Tiberius Gracchus believed Romes society could be fixed if all the farmers were given their land back; rebuild a middle class He redistributed the land from the wealthy back to the small farmers Went to the council of plebs instead of the senate because he knew they wouldnt agree to his plan Not clear if Tiberius was a hero, more feared that if the farmers revolted then it would hurt him and his wealthy friends The wealthy did not like losing their land, so they assassinated Tiberius Gaius Gracchus, his brother, took over reforming Later was killed by a mob Marius used new tactic to get soldiers Offered land and money to people who are willing to be loyal to him Changed the loyalty of the soldiers from the state to the general Sulla, another general, uses his army and takes control of the Roman government in 82 B.C. Now there was stability and order Tries to rebuild the Republic 79 B.C., he retires The First Triumvirate- Pompey, Crassus, and Caesar Allowed them to take command in territories so they could make money Pompey goes to Spain, Crassus goes to Syria, Caesar goes to Gaul Caesar is told to come back without army, or they would go to war Crossed Rubicon River and won the war; became dictator in 47 B.C.
