For carrying out compressive strength, water absorption efflorescence and dimensional tests, the samples of the bricks

shall be taken at random according to the size of the lot as stipulated in Clause 57 of Special Conditions of Contract and samples thus taken shall be stored in a dry place until the tests are made. 2.4.2 Soaking of Bricks Bricks required for masonry in cement mortar shall be thoroughly soaked in clean water before use for at least six hours and until air bubbles cease to come out. The soaked bricks shall be kept on wooden planks or bricks platform to avoid earth being smeared on them. Bricks required for masonry work with mud or flat lime mortars shall not be soaked. 2.4.3 Mortar All brick work shall be laid with specified mortar to be prepared in specified proportion described in the relevant items of Schedule of Quantities. It shall be of cement and coarse sand and shall be made in small quantities so as to be used up within 30 minutes. The mortar shall be mixed in a mechanical mortar riser to a sufficiently thick consistency as required by the Engineer. No left over mortar shall be used.

Laying

2.4.4.1

General Brick work shall be carried out as per IS: 2212. Brick work shall be laid in English Bond unless otherwise specified. Half or cut bricks shall not be used except when needed to complete the bond. Each course shall be perfectly straight horizontally and transversely. The walls shall be taken up truly plumb, if battered, the batter is to be truly maintained. The plumb of the brick work in vertical walls shall be checked up at every one metre interval. Bricks shall be laid with frogs upward. While laying, bricks shall be the roughly bedded and flushed in mortar and tapped into position with a wooden mallet and the superfluous mortar removed.

Raking back of walls at angle Walls of all structures shall be carried up regularly in all cases, leaving no part, one metre lower than another. If this cannot be adhered to, the brick work shall be raked back at an angle not more than 45 degree so as to maintain a uniform and effectual bond, but raking back should not start within 60 centimeter of a corner.
