DESIGN ISSUES GROUP (DIG) (Formerly known as the BUILT ENVIRONMENT ISSUES GROUP (BEIG)) 2007 ANNUAL REPORT

BEIG held their annual meeting during the NAEA conference on March 24, hosted by the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the national design museum. It was well attended, particularly considering there was a snow blizzard and it was miles from the conference center, by 45 participants. 1. The Design Destinations hand-out was given to all participants. This is a community service that our group is going to provide each year to the NAEA members. It includes names, locations, and contact information of places that have a strong design connection in the conference cityA discussion was held about developing a design education brochure and updating the design education website and blogsite managed by Martin Rayala. 2. It was reported that Martin Rayala and Robin Vande Zande gave a presentation to the Council on Policy in Art Education on March 13, the day before the official start of the NAEA conference. It was well received.

3. Caroline Payson, director of education at the Cooper-Hewitt, explained their programming, curriculum, and lesson plan resource website sponsored by the museum 4. Announcements about design education initiatives were made. 5. The final hour of the meeting was spent in a work session developing ideas for the design process schema and worksheet. The four groups of presented their ideas to the attendees . This stimulated a great deal of interest and reflection. In early February, 2008, the NAEA Board approved our request for a name change to the Design Issues Group from the Built Environment Issues Group. Design is much more inclusive or the categories of product, communication, and interactive objects beyond the narrower description of built environment.
