Design Issues Group Annual Report, 2008 The Design Issues Group held their annual meeting at the

2008 NAEA conference in New Orleans. We met at the Longue Vue House and Gardens, a beautiful venue. The first item on the agenda was: how to Develop an NAEA Platform: A platform informs policy and research and serves as a basis fro the NAEA strategic action planning. A proposal should cover these points: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) has national significance advances the mission and stated goals of the NAEA represents a group of individuals and the common needs of the profession identifies salient 21st century issues that impact the visual arts education and the profession at large represents the views and opinions of the NAEA members

The second item was the Publication Proposal. The components for proposal include: Title of proposed publication, Market Analysis that includes: a. Description of intended audience; b. Significance of the work to the filed of art education and its importance relative to existing literature; c. Delineation of the difference between your proposed publication and other NAEA publications and existing literature from other publishers. The summer meeting was held at the National Building Museum on Wednesday, July 9, 2008. This was attended by representatives from other organizations outside of NAEA. There were 14 people in attendance. The primary purpose for the meeting was to determine the most effective approach to submitting a resolution at the national convention in 2009. The resolution will be a proposal to change the name of the national organization from the National Art Education Association to the National Art and Design Education Association. Things that were discussed: 1) The advantages to the name change and the impact on the organization; 2) The disadvantages that may be used in an argument against the change; 3) How to best survey the NAEA membership to establish the opinion of the majority; 4) Other groups or organizations that may be contacted or involved in supporting and assisting with this proposal B) Publications In an effort to disseminate as much information as possible about methods for teaching design to K-12 students, the art education activity magazines have been

contacted. We will discuss these items to generate ideas for finding articles to include in these: 1) Marty Rayala and Paul Sproll are guest editing 2 editions of School Arts magazine with a focus on design 2) Robin Vande Zande has contacted the editor of Arts and Activities who has shown interest in running a monthly feature of a design lesson 3) Brainstorm the idea of recommending that a separate magazine devoted to design education be proposed to Davis Publishing. C) Websites Carolyn Payson, director of education at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, and Sara Rice, the director of youth education at the National Building Museum, have offered to let us use space on their websites. This will allow us to reach thousands of teachers. We will need to decide: 1) What to include on the websites; 2) How to maintain the sites with updated information D) Discussion Board There is much interest in creating a site where people could communicate with each other about design ed topics and publicize events. We will brainstorm ways to do this. E) The Design Destinations Flyers 1) These have been circulated to attendees at the national conference for the past 2 years. Liz Kowalchuk has created them. For New York, New Orleans, and has a jumpstart on Minneapolis. She has requested feedback on the success of these and any suggestions.
