Name:_______________________ Date:_______________________ Hour:_______________________ OBJECTIVE We have completed the Poetry unit. We have spent multiple weeks studying the different forms and elements of poetry. You will now complete the performance task assessment to assess your current level of mastery of the learning target for this unit. During the past month we have learned about various forms of poems and how to define, identify, and use these poems. We have also learned about many different elements of poetry and how to define, identify, and use these elements within a poem. This test is designed to evaluate your mastery of this content. It is my goal that everyone in the class achieves the learning target. DIRECTIONS Please begin by writing your name, hour, and the date in the top right hand corner of this packet. This packet MUST be brought with you to class every day because it contains all of the directions and explanations for this assessment. We have learned about many different elements and forms of poetry recently. In order to accurately assess a poem, you must be able to recognize, use, and classify the different elements and forms that we have studied. So, for this project, you will be performing a poem in a classwide Poetry Slam. You must indicate which form of poetry is used in the poem you choose and distinguish the various elements used to create the emotion for your performance. I will provide for you a wide variety of poems for you to choose from and will give you class time to look through the possible poems. After performing your poem and completing all assigned tasks, you will be turning in your Poetry Slam packet on Day 6. I will now show you a few different examples of former students projects to help you understand what you will be producing. EVALUATION You will be evaluated using the rubric that I have provided for you at the end of this packet. This assessment is worth 100 points and will be a large portion of your final grade for this quarter so please use the time in class wisely! We will be working on this project in class so if you have any questions, please ask me and I will assist you. You may use all of your notes and textbooks to help with definitions and identification of vocabulary words. Please be as neat and creative as possible. Prior to the end of each day, I will be walking around the room to check on everyones progress. Make sure to get my initials on each of your checklists at the end of each day to insure everyone is completing the required material in a timely manner. Once you receive my initials on a checklist, you may move on to the next task.

Section 1:A SECTION ONE: Attending a Poetry Slam TIME: One Day (60 Minutes) MATERIALS Project Checklist (1:B) What I Noticed (1:C) DIRECTIONS Throughout the past few weeks we have been discussing poetry, specifically, various forms and elements that are related to poetry and how these elements are utilized in poems. We have been discussing the ways in which the form of each poem and the elements used within each poem affect the poems meaning.

Today, we will be attending a Poetry Slam! A Poetry Slam is a great place for poets of all ages and backgrounds to put themselves in front of an audience and perform their poetry. These events are fun, exciting, and full of energy. A Poetry Slam is a wonderful outlet for upcoming poets who want to share their poetry with others. For these reasons, I believe this is a great opportunity for us to see the types of emotion that go into making a poem come alive.

I have included a Project Checklist (1:B) for you to keep track of your progress throughout each section of the Poetry Slam project. Please make sure that you continue to check off sections you have completed and stay up to date with all of your work, the checklist is there to help you stay on task. I have also included the What I Noticed (1:C) worksheet for each of you in your folder. Please jot down at least 6 things you notice about the Poetry Slam. You are always welcome to take note about more than 6 things you notice, but keep in mind these notes will be helpful for you later in this project.
