a. Course Aims
• To develop abilities and skills that are relevant to the study and practice of
chemistry; are useful in everyday life; encourage efficient and safe practice;
encourage the presentation of information and ideas appropriate for different
audiences and purposes; promote self motivation and the ability to work in a
sustained fashion;
• To be aware that the study and practice of Chemistry are co-operative and
cumulative activities, and are subject to social, economic, environmental,
technological, ethical and cultural influences and limitations
• To be aware that, whilst the applications of Chemistry may bring great benefits,
there may be detrimental effects to the individual, the community and the
environment, which may be minimised by responsible use of chemical technology
b. Syllabus details
Title: Chemistry AS GCE
Exam board: OCR
Code: AS 3882
c. Work load
Students will have 10 lessons per cycle (2 weeks). They should be spending
approximately 4 hours per week on Chemistry home learning. Reading through
notes and the relevant sections of the textbook, compiling glossaries of key words
and extra note taking should be done on a regular basis.

Section 3 Assessments
a. Assessment Pattern
The assessment pattern is as follows;
Unit 2811 (30% of total AS) – Foundation Chemistry
1 hour Written Examination
Unit 2812 (30%) – Chains and Rings
1 hour Written Examination
Unit 2813 (40%) – How Far, How Fast?/Experimental Skills
45 min – Written Examination (20%)
Coursework or practical examination (20%)
b. Classwork
This will be assessed on an informal basis by question and answer sessions in the
lesson and on a more formal basis by end of topic tests. These tests will use past
examination questions.
c. Home learning
This will involve a variety of activities including: directed reading, note-taking,
research into topics, worksheets, essays, practice exam questions and practical write-
ups. All work will be marked and returned by staff. Home learning should always be
completed and handed in on time. If there are any problems you should discuss these
with the relevant member of staff, prior to the deadline to arrange for help or an
extension if necessary. Students who fail to hand in three pieces of work on time
(consecutively) will in the first instance have their tutor informed, then their HOY and if
need be their parents.
d. Practical Work
Will occur during normal lessons, however, there may be times when a practical will
run over into break or lunch
e. Exams
Year 12-AS exam module 1 and 2 – this includes a practical examination
Section 4 Materials
a. Equipment
You will need A4 ring binders and lined paper for classwork. An H or a 2H pencil. A
scientific calculator is essential.

Recommended textbooks
We also recommend you buy a good Chemical dictionary and an AS revision book.
There are now AS revisions books available especially for the course.
Students should also support their studies by reading from a wide range of material.
Students could also keep a scrapbook of relevant articles from newspapers.
c. Visits
These may be arranged during the course to local sites and institutes. Although not
compulsory they are strongly recommended. Students would be expected to cover the
cost of transport and where necessary entry to establishments.
Section 5 Miscellaneous
a. Progression
A good AS level grade will ensure entry to the A2 course in year 13. A good Advanced
level grade will ensure entry to a wide variety of chemically related courses at Higher
Education and for subsequent career opportunities.
b. Monitoring Progress
At the end of each topic within a module a test will be taken. A % and grade will be
awarded and students will be asked to reflect upon their performance. In addition to
this the normal school procedures for assessment, recording and reporting will be
followed.
