TUT: 2 EVAPORATION 1. At a reservoir in the neighborhood of Delhi the following climatic data was observed. Estimate the mean monthly and annual evaporation from the reservoir using Meyers formula. Month Temp (0C) Relative Humidity (%) 85 82 71 48 41 52 78 86 82 75 77 73 Wind velocity at 2 Km above GL (Km/hr) 4 5 5 5 7.8 10 8 5.5 5 4 3.6 4 (Ans: 175 mm/month) 2. A reservoir had an average surface area of 20 Km2 during June 1982. In that month the mean rate of inflow = 10 m3/sec, mean outflow = 15 m3/sec, monthly rainfall = 10 cm and change in storage = 16 million m3. Assuming the seepage losses to be 1.8 cm, estimate the evaporation in that month. (Ans: 23.4 cm) 3. The average water spread areas that are likely to be maintained during the operation of a reservoir after its completion and the observed monthly pan evaporations at a proposed reservoir site are given below: Month Jan Feb March Apr May June July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Average water spread area in Pan evaporation in cm ha 872 10.2 797 15.3 754.5 25.4 739.5 30.5 726.0 28 717.5 17.8 735.0 15.3 765 14 807.5 14 850 15.3 891 12.7 917 10.2

Estimate the annual evaporation loss from the reservoir in million m3, if 75% of this loss can be prevented and the water thus saved is utilized to irrigate a crop with a requirement of 57 cm of water, how much area can be irrigated? Assume a pan coefficient of 0.7. (Ans: 11.4 million m3, 2000 ha) 4. Compute the daily evaporation from a class A pan if the amount of water added to bring the level to the fixed point are as follows: Day 1 Rainfall (mm) 14 Water added -5 (mm) 2 6 3 3 12 0 4 8 0 5 0 7 6 5 4 7 6 3

What is the evaporation loss of water in this week from a lake (surface area = 640 ha) in the vicinity assuming a pan coefficient of 0.75? (Ans: 47.25 mm) 5. During a daily routine observation, 10.8 litres of water was added to bring the water surface in the evaporation pan to the stipulated level and the nearby raingauge measured 3.6 mm of rainfall. What was the evaporation recorded for the day if the diameter of the pan is 122 cm? (Ans: 12.84 mm)
