MAYOR BOB FILNER PROTECTS THE SEALS AND CLOSES THE CHILDRENS POOL AT NIGHT!
(San Diego) -- Mayor Bob Filner took action today to protect the seals at the Childrens Pool in La Jolla by authorizing and executing an Emergency Permit authorizing the closure of the area from sunset through sunrise until May 15, 2013. The video camera that was recently installed as a way to view the seals anytime night or day and to serve as a research tool, captured people breaching the rope barrier at night, kicking, punching and sitting on top of the mother seals and their pups, and driving them from their resting places. I felt it was important to take this step after evidence of individuals seen on video tape, harassing, taunting and causing stress to the seals at the Childrens Pool in La Jolla. The behavior was shocking, reprehensible and certainly not a reflection of how most citizens in our fine City believe animals should be treated, said Mayor Filner. Starting tonight, the beach area will be closed and monitored to stop any more harassment of the seals. This is a crucial time of year for the seals as it is pupping season. It is important that they not suffer any treatment that could interfere with that process, especially at night when pups are typically born. ###
