Violence awareness
School district observes
national awareness week. PAGE 2

As part of the park grants
that the Burlington County
Department of Resource Con-
servation gave to municipali-
ties throughout the county,
Mt. Laurel is looking to put
the open space at the corner of
Elbo Lane and Hainesport-Mt.
Laurel Road to good use.
The township is planning to
construct Elbo Lane Park on
the site. The new walking park
will be easily accessible for cit-
izens who live in develop-
ments such as Holiday Village,
according to township manag-
er Maureen Mitchell.
Mayor Linda Bobo was
adamant about developing the
location, which is currently
unused. The township pur-
chased the property in 2007 as
open space. Since then, it has
been looking at developing the
property to beautify it and
make it useful for citizens in
the area.
Currently, the property is
vacant open space. There is a
lot of work to be done on the
property, with large weeds,
branches and other debris
lying throughout.
The site has been dis-
turbed for some time, Bobo
said. There are large mounds
of dirt and some other issues.
Its a parcel of land that needs
to be returned to its natural
state.
The park will be funded
thanks to a $100,000 grant
from Burlington County.
Council recognized the grant
at its last meeting on Oct. 7.
Burlington County started
the grant program to provide
municipalities with funding
so that they can create and
maintain new parks while
also preserving open space.

A 15-acre parcel of land will soon be home to the proposed
Elbo Lane Park. The park will include walking and running
trails as well as shaded picnic tables.

While it may have been School
Violence Awareness Week across
the state, the Mt. Laurel School
District puts an emphasis on re-
spect every day.
In addition to the special activi-
ties and events the schools held
for violence awareness last week,
Mt. Laurel has a program that
puts extra emphasis on the idea of
a school family all year-round to
help prevent bullying, according
to Director of Communication
Services Marie Reynolds.
Mt. Laurel schools take 10 min-
utes out of the beginning of every
day to have a session called Re-
sponsive Classroom.
In Responsive Classroom, the
students sit together and discuss
whatever is on their minds. It al-
lows the kids to get stress from
outside the classroom off their
chest before the school day be-
gins.
Its been very positive,
Reynolds said. There are things
that come up in the classroom
that set the tone for the rest of the
day.
Reynolds depicted one scenario
where an elementary school stu-
dents dog had died the previous
evening. Not only did discussing
it allow the teacher and students
to understand why the student
was sad, but they were also very
empathetic to the student the rest
of the day.
The program, in that sense,
brings togetherness to the class.
Theyre starting their day as a
family, Reynolds said. Its like
theyre sitting around the break-
fast table.
Reynolds said the staff mem-
bers are very social and upbeat as
the students enter the school as
well. The teachers play as big of a
part in the Responsive Classroom
as the students do.
Our staff members have been
specifically trained in that so they
meet our students in the morning
with a handshake and a friendly
greeting, Reynolds said.
The Responsive Classroom and
the programs that Mt. Laurel
schools held during Violence
Awareness Week are not new ini-
tiatives to the district.
Reynolds said Mt. Laurel has
been at the forefront of promot-
ing anti-bullying and was coun-

According to Mitchell, the pro-
posed Elbo Lane Park will be a
passive recreation area that in-
cludes walking and running
trails around the perimeter and a
picnic area in the center with
shade trees around it.
In addition to the walking
trails, there will be checkers and
games tables where visitors can
relax with friends and sit in a
shaded area.
The goal of the project is for
the township to create a new park
that is in a quiet part of town as
well as give additional recreation-
al options for its citizens.
The location for the park will
be an alternative for many who
do not live as close to Laurel
Acres Park.
While the park will be located
close to Holiday Village, a senior
citizens development, Bobo em-
phasized that this park will be for
everyone.
This is a park that will be for
the entire Mt. Laurel communi-
ty, she said.
Those who are excited about
the park will still have to wait a
little bit for it to become a reality.
While Council received the grant
from the county, it still has to
open bidding before any work can
be done on the site.

oting is one of the inalienable
rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important in-
alienable rights that we have as Amer-
icans, if not the most important in-
alienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for inde-
pendence in the 1700s based on the ral-
lying cry of no taxation without rep-
resentation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representa-
tion.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the
Constitution gave voting rights to non-
white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort was spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States over the age of 18
the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take ad-
vantage of that right at the polls for
the General Election next Tuesday,
Nov. 5.
Up for election are the states gover-
nor a race between Republican in-
cumbent Chris Christie and Democrat
Barbara Buono the states lieutenant
governor a race between Republican
Kim Guadagno and Democrat Milly
Silva as well as local positions.
In this weeks Sun, you will find in-
formation on exactly what you are vot-
ing for, when polls are open and details
on every polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find infor-
mation on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for, just
make sure you make your way to the
polls next Tuesday. Many people be-
fore us fought for your inalienable
right to do so.

tering it before the state passed
the law on bullying in 2011.
For example, Responsive Class-
room has been a program that Mt.
Laurel has featured in its schools
for the last 10 years.
These are things we always
did, Reynolds said. You cant
teach kids that are sitting at their
desk worried about the kid sitting
next to them. Its a matter of cli-
mate.
For School Violence Awareness
Week, Mt. Laurel schools did a va-
riety of activities that corre-
sponded to each specific grade
level.
In the elementary schools,
focus was put on the kids being
upstanders and saying some-
thing to their peers when they are
being a bully toward another
classmate.
School counselors at Larch-
mont Elementary School visited
each classroom to teach this les-
son to the students, while at Fleet-
wood Elementary School, first-
and second-grade students read a
book called The Juice Box
Bully that taught the very same
lesson.
The middle schools had activi-
ties relating to anti-bullying as
well. The Hartford School created
a school-wide mural as part of a
Band-Aid for Bullying program.
Meanwhile, at Harrington Mid-
dle School, the students attended
an assembly called Straight Talk,
where a non-profit group called
the Steered Straight Organization
talked to the seventh- and eighth-
grade students about making bet-
ter decisions in life.
The focus of all of these pro-
grams is to make Mt. Laurel
schools a place where the school
family comes first.
