Heroism

Date: November 26, 2012 Subject: English Language Arts Grade Level:8 Time Duration:45 minutes Overview of Lesson: The three videos will be introduced to the students and the teacher will give the students questions to ponder while each of the videos is being played. After each video is played the teacher will briefly discuss the acts of heroism the video has displayed and relate the videos to the students. After the three videos have been played the students will choose one of the videos to write two paragraphs on. The topic for paragraph one will discuss how the person they chose showed they were heroic, and the second topic will show how the video affected them personally. Outcomes:
CR8.4 View critically and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of visual and multimedia texts including videos, television broadcasts, informational presentations, dramatic presentations, websites, and news programs to locate and interpret key messages and details, to develop conclusions, opinions, and understanding, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the text. CC8.6 Use oral language to interact purposefully, confidently, and respectfully in a variety of situations including one-to-one, small group, and large group discussions (expressing feelings and viewpoints and contributing to group harmony).

Cross Curricular Competencies:


Developing Social Responsibility: Students will begin to understand how they can positively influence others within their community as they learn what they can do to be a role model for their peers. Students will be shown videos of heros that are making a difference within our world today and will be shown how they can truly make a difference.
