Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is a country in South America comprising the eastern half of the continent and some groups of small islands in the Atlantic Ocean. With an estimated area of over 8.5 million km , is the fifth largest country in the world in total area (equivalent to 47% of the South American territory). Tourism in Brazil is an important economic activity in several regions of the country. With more than 5 million foreign visitors in 2010, Brazil is the second destination of the international tourism market in South America, second only to Argentina, and ranks third in Latin America in terms of flow of international tourists, after Mexico and Argentina. The Brazilian Carnival is an annual celebration that takes place forty days before Easter (marking the beginning of Lent). It has several variations with its European counterpart and also differences over Brazilian territory.
