Definition of Polio
Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Therefore, the strategy to eradicate polio is based on preventing infection by immunizing every child to stop transmission and ultimately make the world polio free.

Transmission of Polio
The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands or such objects as eating utensil, food contaminated with the stool of an infected person. Polio virus is transmitted primarily through person-to-person contact with an infected individual, especially individuals with poor personal hygiene.

Sign and Symptoms


There are two types of polio :
Non paralytic polio does not cause paralysis

but can cause of fever, weakness, drowsiness,


sore throat, vomiting, head ache and flu.

After that, patient can be cured within a few


days.

Paralytic polio can cause constipation, drooling, muscle pain, muscle weakness, paralysis which can sometimes appear suddenly. In bulbar and bulbospinal polio, paralysis can affect respiratory and heart function.

Prevention
A polio vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the poliovirus dan polio vaccine can given to people with weakened immune systems.

Polio can easily be prevented by administration of either the Salk vaccine, which contains an inactivated poliovirus, or the Sabin oral vaccine, which contains a weakened live virus.
