The History of Halloween

By: Cerenity
Halloween is a great time for all people. It is celebrated on October 31. It was originally called Samhain (saw-when), All Hallows Eve, or All Hallows Evening. Halloween was originated when European, Irish, and English immigrants brought their Halloween customs with them. When people used to trick-or-treat they would say Treat me or Ill trick you! Then they shortened it to Trick-or-Treat. That is also why Trick-or-Treating is called Trick-or-Treating. Trick-or-Treating began when farmers went house to house to beg for food. That is one of the main things we do for Halloween except now we get treats and candy instead. Dressing in costumes began when people put on masks to scare the evil spirits. That is another big thing we do at Halloween. Carving pumpkins is another fun thing we do at Halloween. That started when a man played too many tricks. Later when he died he was band from Heaven and Hell. He had to roam the world as a ghost. He carried a carved turnip with coal inside it lighting it up. Bobbing for apples is another fun thing we do at this time of year. It started when people worshipped their goddess Pompana, the goddess of fruit, with animals, fruit and other food. HAPPY HALLOWEEN
