Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Equations with Algebraic Fractions Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able calculate the difference and total of algebraic fractions. Most students should be able to solve an equation involving a linear algebraic fraction. Some students should be able to solve an equation involving a quadratic algebraic fraction. Key words: Algebraic Fraction, Common Denominator, Equation, Quadratic Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students evaluate the difference and total of two algebraic fractions. The two questions are intended to be differentiated depending on the ability of the class. It maybe useful to encourage the students to attempt which ever question they feel most comfortable with. Alternatively, the class could work in pairs and attempt both questions. Solutions could be presented to the teacher on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Due to the complexity of the questions this starter may take longer than normal. Development Once the class are confident adding and subtracting algebraic fractions with different denominators solving the resultant linear equation should be fairly easily. Work through questions a and b on the second slide and have the class attempt questions c and d independently. When completed, pose the question, How is question e different to the others? Ideally students will recognise that by having the algebraic expressions as the denominators a quadratic equation will result once the difference between the two is found. Students should be able to attempt the problems on the third slide independently. Plenary The plenary is intended to cover each of the learning objectives. Have the class attempt the question on mini-whiteboards and present their solution to the teacher for feedback and assessment. Since the problem requires multiples steps encourage a mix of students to present their solutions to the class if they are willing. Differentiation More able: Students could solve equations where both the numerator and denominator have algebraic expressions. Including a third fraction on the left hand side could lead on to cubic equations. Less Able Students may need to stick with fractions that lead to a linear equation rather than a quadratic.
