Coulombs Law
An attractive or repulsive force is observed between any pair of electrically charged objects. The magnitude and direction of the force is dependent on whether the charges are positive or negative, the strength of the charge and the position of the two objects. If two objects both have positive charge or negative charge then the force is repulsive and acts on the axis between the two objects, as illustrated in the following diagram.

If the objects have different charges then the force is attractive.

Coulombs law is an inverse square law 1; its effect is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the objects. Coulombs law is an essential part of the theory of electromagnetism2. The law states that the force f on a charge Q1 at a position p1 that is caused by the effect of a charge Q2 at a position p2 is given by the formula

where

represents the permittivity of the region.

The full magnitude of the force acts along the axis between the two objects and has the following inverse square form

where r is the distance between p1 and p2. Follow the footnote link for a video explanation3.
