An outstanding development in outdoor substation lighting units is the Holophane one piece refractor with prismatic lens top. The light directing refractor and the light controlling top lens are made of thermally stable rxrunar,i4 glass.
Refractor and lens assembly are supported by a spun-
1. Maximum candlepower produced from same unit at 105" for lateral coverage of low structures and 180" for high mounted switches, 0' being directlv below unit. 2. Outputs of 69?i for mercury vapor and 63% for jncandr.scenl lamps in 90-180' zone assurc maximum utilization of light on overhead switches and struqtures. 3. Glare is absent because all light output is refracted
upward and along the sight lines of switching station or substation operators. 4. Original output can be restored by cleaning outside of lcns top and refractor at relamping time. High operating output is rnaintained between lamp changes by natural action of rain.
on and sealed 16 gauge Alzak aluminum reflector; which, in turn, attaches to a threaded cast aluminum
collar. The collar engages threads in a cast aluminum fitter rvhich supports a mogul base lamp socket, and slip fits over 1%" diameter pipe to a depth of 21tr". Stainless steel set screws are used (A) to secure the fitter on mounting bracket or post top and (B) to prevent rotation of outer collar on inner fitter after lateral light beam adjustment has been set for angles of 100' to 110'. The top lens, 10%" in diameter, is held in a cast metal collar which has 2 stainless steel spring tension latches opposite one another. These latches are hand operated to clamp the lens top to the refractor assembly on a gasket with a bearing surface of %"; this keeps the interior of the fixture dirt and weather tight. The lens top is removed for lamp replacements. Comparisons, on an equal
perio|ity of these lens top llxtures. Calculations for a typical layout, r,r'ith disconnect switches 24 feet and lighting units 12 feet above ground, result in 16.8 footcandles using 12 No. 04252 rvith 400 watt clear mercnry vapor lamps. This is about 50!.1 more average initial illumination, on the underside of the horizontal plane

MOUNTING ACCESSOBIES
Bracket No. 0876 is used on vertical members of substation structures lor NEW installations of No. 04252. Additional ground lighting units can also be attached to this bracket. For RELIGHTING jobs where there are old style

Standards for post top mounting of No. 04252 may be secured from post or pole manufacturers. Shields
er, Catalog No.0218 is used for installations of No. 04252 to rcpl^ce obsolete lighting units.
Metal inner shields Sd-51 are available for use on stations near residential properties. Shields can be ordered with new fixtures, or purchased separately and installed in existing fixtures. In final assemblies, shields
may be rotated in fixtures to the most efiective positions.
