What is Past Perfect Tense?


Past Perfect Tense is the tense that used to express an event (action) in the past that have been completed before the other acts performed.

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Active)


Positive (+) Nominal Form S + Had + Been

Ex: He had been at home. Verbal Form


S + Had + V3 Ex: They had left before you arrived

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Active)


Negative (-) S + Had + Not + V3 Ex: My sister had not slept She had not left home before you reached. You had not paid your debt before I gave you money.

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Active)


Interrogative (?) Had + S + V3 ? Ex: Had we sprayed the flower? Had they slept when my brother arrived? Had I took a bath when she reached?

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Passive)


Positive(+) S + Had + Been + V3

Ex: The chicken had been eaten by Her. Dishes had been washed by Sinar

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Passive)


Negative(-) S + Had + Not + Been + V3

Ex: The chicken had not been eaten by Her. Dishes had not been washed by Sinar.

Past Perfect Tense Formula (Passive)


Interrogative(?) Had + S + Been + V3

Ex: Had the chicken been eaten by her? Had dishes been washed by Sinar?

Past Perfect Tense in Other Form


Reported Speech Ex: He said that he had listened carefully the instruction. I thought I had had breakfast. Conditional Type 3 Ex: If I had not came late, I would have been eaten the cake. His work would have been finished if he had worked hard. They should have been looked by my uncle if you had not given the news.
