Response of Piles and Casings To Horizontal Free Field Soil Displacements
Response of Piles and Casings To Horizontal Free Field Soil Displacements
Response of Piles and casings to horizontal free field soil displacements Peter M. Byrne, Donald L. Anderson and Walter Janzen Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1984
Objectives
Using a simple method of predicting the pile behavior cause by free field displacement of the soil.
Methodology
The method is based upon replacing the soil by a system of horizontal nonlinear springs and the springs being attached to a free field, the free field movements cause the outer ends of the springs to deflect, which results in load and deflection of the piles (refer to fig 2).
Important findings
Flexible casing will essentially track with the free field and be subjected to low bending moments and shearing forces Stiff casing will essentially move as a rigid body, cutting through the soil and will be subjected to high forces and moments This method shows that the forces and moments are much smaller than would have been calculated from an analysis based on the conventional assumption that the casing track with soil
