Vocabulary: Population Density: the number of people living per unit of area Fertility: the birthrate of a population. Life Expectancy: the probable number of years remaining in the life of an individual or class of persons determined statistically Mortality: the state or condition of being subject to death Death Rate: the relative frequency of deaths in a specific population

Learning Objectives: Using my 2012 world population data, worksheet, and group, I can analyze countries and their population data.

Materials/Resources:

Composition Book Pencil/Pen Slide with directions Students will be able to: - Warm-up Understand and define population density - Objective Analyze different countries population data - Homework Compare county statistics Stunning Time Laps Video Clip Discuss the possible reasons why some countries 7 Billion and Counting Video Clip on the same continent/region have different 2012 World Population Data Packet (35 copies) statistics Country Profiler Worksheet (200 copies) Bag with slips of paper with countries on them (35) Blank world map (100 copies) Introduction: Students will be exposed to the rich culture of Asia along with the political, economic, and technological advancements. Students will begin class with their composition books, planners, and writing utensil. Warm Up: Students will watch the Stunning Time Laps video and try to guess the cities that emit the most light.

Steps/Activities:

Time:

1. Students will come in, grab their composition books (warm up) and write the objective in their planner. a. The instructor will guide the students in pronouncing the vocabulary worlds and clarifying definitions when needed b. Students will watch the Stunning Time Laps video and will attempt to identify the cities that emit the most light seen from the international space station c. Students will share their answers and reasoning (8-10 min) 2. Students will watch the video 7 Billion and Counting a. The instructor will lead a discussion about the video and ask what they (the students) think will happen if the population continues to grow at this rate (6 min) 3. The instructor will begin the 2012 World Population Data Lesson a. The instructor will pass out the 2012 World Population Data packet, Country Profiler, and blank world map to each student b. The instructor will give directions and model how to complete the activity, each student will color in the US on the blank world map (because that is the country they profiled) and fill out a Country Profiler of the USA with the instructor to understand how to complete one on their own c. When all questions are answered students will come up and pick a slip of paper from the instructor that has a country that they will be profiling and new Country Profiler sheet d. Students will color in the country they are profiling on their blank world map and begin to profile their data using the 2012 World Population Data packet e. When students finish they will get into groups with other countries on the same continent and compare profiles, each student will color in their group members country on their maps and answer questions re: demographics f. Towards the end of class students will return to their seats and debrief the class about their questions/answers 3. If students end early, they can complete another profiler for a different country 4.Conclusion: Each group will debrief their questions with the rest of the class and turn in their paper 5.
