Lesson Summary:

This lesson will teach the children about continents, countries, and flags of the world. We will be using
technology tools like YouTube, BrainPOP, and Google Earth to incorporate into their learning this week.
The outcome of this lesson will be that children will be able to name the 7 continents, and name at least 7
more countries matching their flags and country shape.

Estimated Duration:

Three 50-minute sessions

Commentary:
As an attention grabber, I will be starting with open-ended questions for the children asking about which city
we live in, next the state, then the country. We will then discuss the correct answers and engage the children
in talking about anyone they know from other countries.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:

For the first 10 minutes we will do a small introductory activity. I will be asking open-ended questions to
engage the children about which country they are currently in and which countries they know.

The next 20 minutes we will be showing educational videos on BrainPop and use the smart board to show
pictures of maps and the globe with countries and their flags.

The last 10 minutes will consist of children choosing which country they would like to present over. The
presentation will consist of the children naming the country, and coloring in the flag.

Day 2:

Children will be ready with their country choices and will be given colored paper with the flag. They will
color the flag, label the country name. This activity will go on for about 20 minutes.

Next the children will present their colored flags and be able to name the country to their peers. The
presentations will last for about 30 minutes.

Day 3:
The children will discuss with their peers about the countries and flags. We will then provide a worksheet
where children will match the flag with the country name. There will be 5 matching questions.

Pre-Assessment:
While asking open-ended questions at the beginning of the lesson, we will be able to assess the common
understanding of the subject amongst the children in the class. We will also be using scaffolding comments
to develop their interest in the topic as well, such as “what is the name of the country we live in?” and “do
you know any friends or family from another country? Which country?”
Scoring Guidelines:
This will be an oral assessment where children will give answers to the best of their knowledge, and
we will help them from there on.

Post-Assessment:

The assessment will be the worksheet that the children will work on at the end of the lesson. The worksheet
will consist of 5 matching questions of the 10 countries and flags taught during the lesson.
Scoring Guidelines:
We will be giving 1 point for each correct matching answer. With a total of 5 points possible for the
5 questions.

Differentiated Instructional Support

For gifted or accelerated students, we will be offering an additional worksheet with 5 more matching
questions. This comes out to matching all 10 countries taught in the lesson.

For students who might be struggling, worksheets will be given with objective options. For each country
they will be given 2 flag options to choose the correct answer from.

Extension
BrainPop videos:
https://jr.brainpop.com/socialstudies/geography/
Here children will be able to research more into the topic and learn about continents and the oceans of the
world too, if they want to go above and beyond.

Google Earth:
https://earth.google.com/
This is an advanced globe application that children can learn about on their respective
computers/iPads/chromebooks.

YouTube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk54tybepac
This video teaches a few countries and shows their respective flags. Students can also benefit from learning
what the country’s shape looks like.

Homework Options and Home Connections

The homework would be for the children to discuss and engage with their families and friends at home about
the different countries they know. We encourage the child to share any additional countries or flags they
learned and speak about it in class with their peers.
Interdisciplinary Connections

The lesson can promote learning about what language each country speaks and introduce the many different
many cultures (Language).

Another subject that can be taken away from this lesson is art. While exploring and experiencing the colors
and patterns of each flag, children are able to learn different types of art.
