Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Substituting values into expressions Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to substitute a known value into an algebraic expression in the form Most students should be able to substitute a known value into an algebraic expression in the form Some students should be able to substitute a known value into an algebraic expression in the form

Keywords: Substitute, Expression, Known, Unknown Learning Activities Starter/Introduction The idea of representing unknown values to be solved as letters is introduced through a number line problem. A common misconception is to divide the total difference by four since there are four terms along the line. Guide the class to considering the difference between each term as a means to solving for A and B. Development Discuss with the class that 3n represents 3 x n. Explain that the expression 3n + 4 is simply a collection of mathematical terms with no numeric value until a value for n is known and substituted in its place. However, n could be any value, although in this case it is specified as 2. Discuss the meaning of the term substitution. It maybe useful to use a sports metaphor when a substitution is when one person replaces another. Work through the remaining problems with the students. It maybe useful to review the order of operations as a means to break down the calculations. The class should be able to work through the problems on the third slide independently. Feedback the values throughout to maintain pace. Plenary The plenary is intended as a challenge for the class to apply their learning by breaking down several problems in order to calculate different values of the unknown from corresponding expressions. It may be useful to have the class work in pairs or small groups depending on ability. Have solutions presented on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: The use of powers could be included as part of the expressions. Negative or decimal values could be substituted. Less Able The use of a calculator could be encouraged.
