2013 Season: Issue Six

Artificial pitches

are revolutionising the game of football in our fair capital. For the first time ever, teams are practically guaranteed to see out a full season and in ten years time we should see a real rise in the quality of players coming through. But this has also meant the introduction of night matches during the week and with them increasingly short turn arounds. How are teams to cope? Enjoy, Paddy

Sealords vs IBU Reds, Karori Park 2 11.05.2013

Following their first midweek match of the season the Sealords were left with an extremely short turn around (only three days!) for their next match against Capital Ten leaders, the Island Bay United Reds, featuring Sealords nemesis Daniel Wierenga. With the Sealords injury mini-crisis still continuing, Mark Macca Mckeown retained his place in the squad while the return of Jakob Klinsmann Wollner meant there was no space in the squad for Hamish Finn Templeton. After two precipitation free matches the rain had returned and the Lords were expecting a tough clash considering the Reds results so far this season. The Sealords started off strongly with Mike Stringer Stringer and Macca covering plenty of ground in the middle of the park and preventing the Reds from establishing any sort of rhythm. The Sealords defence was as solid as ever, ending the Reds attacking moves before they could even start with the returning Marty Sex Appeal Sherwin in particularly impressive form. Up front Tom Horse Newby was leading the line, using his strength and speed to trouble the Reds defence. The Lords were having the better of the game and even the loss of Captain Drysdale to injury fifteen minutes in didnt disrupt their flow and in no time at all the Lords would take the lead. After making a hash of one one-on-one with the keeper Horse wouldnt repeat the same mistake twice. Instead he found Kris Phils Flatmate Annear on his right with a weighted pass, taking one touch Kris then launched the ball past the advancing keeper and into the net. One-nil! Shortly after, Macca was found on the right side of the Reds goal box and ignoring the cries of Jason Mr Facebook van Hattum he slotted the ball between the keeper and the far post to put the Lords two up. But they werent finished yet. Greg Ole Gunnar Severinsen has come on for Captain

Drysdale and with only minutes remaining in the first half he received the ball about fifteen metres out from the Reds goal box. He took a couple of touches and then spotting the Reds keeper off his line he launched an audacious ball towards the goal. As the keeper realised his dreadful error and began to back track the ball sailed over his head and into the back of the net. For the second time in a week the Lords were up three-nil against an Island Bay team at halftime and having just witnessed a goal of the season contender it would be fair to say they were in good spirits. As the second half kicked off the Lords continued to dominate proceedings and the expected backlash from the Reds failed to materialise. Early on Jakob found Greg on the edge of the box; Greg took a touch before planting it down the middle past the keeper who had inexplicably positioned himself on the left hand post. It was soon five-nil when Jonny Tim Wild spotted a gallivanting Daniel Wierenga out of position and sent a breathtaking ball up field with his weaker foot to Macca on the left wing. Macca cut inside at the corner of the box and unleashed a beautiful curled finish around the keeper and into the right hand corner. The race for the first Sealord hat trick of the season was on! When Jase held up the ball just ahead of the centre circle he gave Greg enough time to start moving. Jase then turned superbly, outwitting the Reds defender and played a beautiful through ball ahead for Greg to run onto and coolly finish to claim his hat trick and there was still twenty five minutes to go! An injury to Lewis Mr Consistent Hensman disrupted the efforts of the Sealords defence and the Reds were able to claw back two goals in the following ten minutes. But the defence steadied itself until the final play of the match when the Reds got a final consolation goal. The final result of 6-3 saw the Lords shoot to the top of Cap Ten for the first time since round three. For his hat trick heroics Greg took out man of the match. Macca was second and Marty rounded out the awards. Result: Sealords 6 3 Island Bay Reds Goals: G. Severinsen x3 M. Mckeown x2 K. Annear Assists: T. Newby J. Wild J. Wollner
