he Sewing Answer Book answers all the questions beginning and intermediate sewers might have covering fabric facts; sewing machine basics; working with patterns; and the ins and outs of interfacing, gathers, pleats, zippers, hems, and much more.

The machine jams when I start stitching and I end up with a messy bunch of stitches on the underside of my seam. Whats wrong?
Those birds nests are a real plague and often happen because the feed dogs dont have much to grab onto at the beginning of a seam. Check the threading and make sure the bobbin thread is engaged in the tension mechanism. When you start a seam, pull enough top and bobbin thread behind the presser foot to grasp firmly and hold onto them as you begin to stitch. For a quick fix, place two layers of Scotch Magic Tape or masking tape over the zigzag hole in the plate and run an unthreaded needle up and down to pierce a hole in it. Clean any adhesive residue on the needle with rubbing alcohol before you thread and start stitching.
