Name: Sara McManus Date: May 16, 2013 District or approved Private School: Shoreline School District Building and/or Assignment: Shorecrest High School Standard/Benchmarks: The school counselor demonstrates skills to utilize data and systems change theory to advocate for school policies, programs, and services that enhance a positive school climate. Present Levels of Performance (Includes External Assessment and Self Reflection): The present level of performance includes the use of a needs assessment to determine specific school-wide interventions and pre / post assessment data to gauge the level to which students met the objectives designed for guidance lessons in classrooms and small groups. With data from the interventions for my advocacy project, I will be promoting the use of high impact funds to target credit deficient ELL and exited juniors and seniors during the 2013 2014 school year. This is a school-wide discussion, but could be expanded to look more generally at data about student success and design more school wide intervention to help struggling students. New skills and/or knowledge needed to meet benchmarks? In order to lead school-wide efforts to identify barriers to student learning and create an inclusive, nurturing, and physically safe learning environment I would need to develop an ELL Site Team educated about issues facing first generation students and families. With this group, I would love to attend something like the AVID ELL strand training or some other cultural awareness seminar that would provide insight for the group on issues of family school engagement.
