Close Reading of 9 Ways Common Core Will Change Classroom Practice-Melanie Define close reading WE will discuss this with partners at the tables. 1. What changes in classroom practices will result from implementing Common Core Standards in Math? 2. What changes in classroom practices will result from implementing Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts? 3. What can you infer regarding the need for these changes? Introduce and Discuss Shifts Chart-Karen(might use LCD to present this) Begin Modeled Lesson: Modeled Lesson From Common Core: I can identify purpose, provide evidence, and make inferences by doing a close reading. I can find three different arguments in Kings Letterand support them with evidence from the text by doing a close reading. I can define which of Kings argument has the most evidence to support it within the text. 1. Ask the students to read the first paragraph of Kings letter. Students will highlight information they learn about the writer of the letter. In the margins, students will explain why they highlighted particular points.(5 minutes) 2. Turn to your shoulder partner and share what we know so far about the person writing this letter. ( 2 min) 3. Teacher reads the 1st paragraph aloud and allows time for clarifying questions. 4. So now we are going to move into paragraphs 2-4, please read these paragraphs with the following question in mind, What are the three arguments King makes for why he is in Birmingham? You will want to underline the reasons as you locate them in the text. (Allow 10 minutes)

5. Pass out and explain handout to tables, explain they will complete the handout in a world cafthey will only address one question at a time. Questions From Chart: 6. Facilitate Discussion using reporters to share out information. ( 5-10) 7. 3 Corner Share: Which argument from Kings letter do you think is the strongest argument. Take a minute to discuss within your corner group WHY you chose to be in that corner.
