Movie Posters

Students will create a movie and design a poster in order to explore ideas of advertising, movie poster uses/purpose, and what makes a successful design.

Working together - look at different movie posters. (2/19/13)


1: Make a list of all the information a successful movie poster includes? 2: What are the most important parts of a poster? 3: Select the most successful poster design and add its image to the "poster examples" google presentation shared with you. 4: Look at 3 elements of the poster - explain why you think they are that way. + Font used? Where is the title? Image shown? Placement of information? Colors?+ What do you think people were thinking when they made the posters you are looking at? Why did they make the choices they did?

5: List 3 elements/principles of design.


How are they used or exemplified in the movie posters you found?

Write one word on each slip of paper you have been give. (ONE WORD ONE PAPER) (2/20/13)
1: NOUN 2: VERB 3: ADJECTIVE 4: ADVERB 5: MAKE UP A WORD FOLD Each paper in half and place in the box.

Now you are going to draw 4 words from the box. These four words are going to be used in the title of your movie. Write your words down in your sketchbook and brainstorm 20 possible movie titles.

In YOUR SKETCHBOOK you need to BRAINSTORM 2 different ideas (2/21/13)


At least 1 full page for each movie idea DETAILS! You need to think about ... What the movie is going to be called? What is the main theme? How does the title represent the movie? How can you combine your words to make an interesting title? *who are the characters? what is the plot?, what are the important parts/ events? What is the genre? You can write a list, make a web, draw a storyboard, write a paragraph, sketch, combine words/images -use the format makes sense to you-

+ work on writing a plot summary of your movie. Include the title, genre, characters, rating and a clear description of the events of the movie. You need to write as you would for language arts, proofread/edit, proper language usage, topic sentences ....

+ Detailed and engaging summary of your created movie. (characters, plot, events....) + have one peer edit and complete peer edit google form(link under presentation in this post)

A successful Movie Poster has:


1. Attention jump out from the wall. 2. Iconography showing without telling. 3. Interest create an incentive to see the film.

4. Appeal create desire with fans and non-fans alike.


5. Style a look thats consistent with the film. 6. Lasting Appeal a look that suits other formats. 7. Recognizability if its a sequel, make it obvious.

What information needs to be included to make a successful poster?

In your poster you need to use one source not from internet searchDrawings?Photos?(Stage a scene?Collect Props? Setup backdrop?) Scan images from magazines? Scan other things - labels, objects? make an image using another computer program?
