PONT
duPont was a name, a legacy, and a reputation. It eclipsed other representations of Manual because it embodied the school in a way every generation of inventive students could manipulatea name that could change with the pulse of the student body.
As Lil Waynes song, Stuntin Like Mufasa blasted throuhout the gym, students in banana costumes invaded the Red/White Week pep rally. Monkeys chased after them, followed by a parade of kangaroos, tigers, elephants, and countless other animals, accompanied by a handful of zookeepers. The senior class had made their grand entrance. steering committee, along with the rest of the senior class, put together the show. I think the most memorable part of it was the entrance to the Lion King song, James Bowling (12) said. It really pulled the theme together.

duPont Strikes Back

With controversal origins, the nickname Dirty duPont became a source of pride for many students. A prank involving rival Male students depositing toilets on campus in 2010 introduced the nickname Dirty duPont, but the name held new meaning in 2011 students associated themselves with the dirty Words by Patrick Haertel & Sarah Rohleder Design by Nolle Pouzar, Yazmin Martinez & Keevin HenleyIllustration by Yazmin Martinez & Nolle Pouzar du on social networks and in conversation, and even used the phrase on a Red/White Week banner. They used it to insult us, but we turned it around and started taking pride in it. Its part of the rivarly, Aaron Jessie (11) said. It would be weird if anyone else said it.

EARN YOUR STRIPES Jacquelyn Ha (12) riled up the crowd in her zebra getup at the Red/ White Week pep rally. It was our last pep rally, so I was extra excited, she said. I wanted to show the school that the seniors have the most spirit.Photo by Jared Rondinelli

The owner of a mysterious student Twitter account with duPont in its namewhich became well
known for its witty and candid depiction of student lifequietly kept his or her identity secret. Twitter, a social networking website, allowed users to post 140-character tweets about life updates. In contrast to the previous years school controversy centered around a web forum that tolerated anonymous cyberbullying, the duPont Twitter account reinforced a sense of pride in students, who contributed their own tweets and tagged the duPont account. It mentions stuff that we experience everyday and it kind of unites us in that way, Samuel Ross said. I like how its so unique to Manual and its so true, like yeah that happened to me too, Jabari Nickelson (12) said. Students speculated about the face behind the account, which acquired nearly 600 followers in the course of its first month. I definitely think its an upperclassman, Misty Johnston (12) said, because they say things about stuff thats happened since Ive been in this school.

SOPHOMORE
It took only two weeks and a Facebook page for the class of 2014 to come up with a theme for the basketball homecoming pep rally. The two ideas Horton Hears a WhoPont and Scooby DooPont blew up the sophomores notifications, followed by rejectionuntil Red, White, and BluPont. That Friday, the entire class were easily identified in camouflauge, American flags, and denim. I like seeing our class unify behind a theme, Raleigh Dixon (10) said. Redneck was thrown out before red, white, and blue was. Since part of The sophomores Red, White and BluPont theme brought out the stars and stripes. the redneck stereotype is to be super patriotic, I thought it fit. Several American flags were on display in the sophomore section, one held above Tyler Wojziak (10), Cole Finke (10), Breckinridge Stodgill (10), and Leif Sweazy (10). The class of 2014 has a Facebook page, and we had to come up with something that rhymed with duPont, Breckinridge Stodghill (10) said. We had a voting session the Monday before the pep rally, when everyone had to vote. Photo by Zachary Jones

Bumper stickers saying Oh Lets Du It suddenly appeared in the student parking lot. Ali Ahmed (12) made the stickers, which were a play on the Waka Flock Flame song Oh Lets Do It. Soon after, the field hockey team won state. Annhollin Delahantys (11)

father, inspired by the Nike slogan, made Just Du It shirts for her team, and their popularity sparked a fundraiser. We made the shirts as a present to the team for making it, Delahanty said. We wore them to school the next day and people said, Oh, I want one. We sold about 200.
SACRED DEFEAT Field hockey supporters at the state final against Sacred Heart Academy hold up Just Du It signs after the phrase became the unofficial slogan of the team. Weve never had that many people come to a game before, Katharyn Hovious (11) said. The girls put up a ton of signs and sold t-shirts. Photo by Miranda Thompson
