9-5 Dilations

• DILATION a type of transformation that


has a center and a scale factor.

Dilate this shape


using this scale factor…
r=½
• Negative Scale Factor: the image just
reflects through the center to the opposite
side.
On the coordinate plane…
• Dilations usually occur around the origin.

• To draw a dilated image, just multiply the


scale factor by the X and Y coordinates of
the original.
To find a scale factor…
• Just take one of the lengths of the new
image, and divide it by the same length of
the original image.
