Telemachus Returns
• Telemachus arrives home to
Ithica

• Telemachus goes to visit his


“loyal swineherd”

• Eumaeus greets Telemachus


as if he was his own son

• Telemachus sends Eumaeus


off to proclaim his return to
his mother, Penelope.
Telemachus and the

Stranger
Telemachus begins to whine to
the stranger about the suitors.
It is very obvious that he has
had no fatherly guidance
• The Stranger gives fatherly
advice that helps Telemachus
• Athena, Goddess of Wisdom,
transforms the stranger (who is
Odysseus), into a younger
looking version
• Telemachus, at first, does not
believe that the man is his
father
Telemachus and Odysseus
• Telemachus finally
believes that this man is
in fact his father.
• He is overjoyed and
begins to weep while
embracing his father
• Odysseus learns of the
suitors who plague
Ithica. He develops a
plan to get rid of them
• Telemachus admits his
weakness and asks to be
helped
The Suitors Plot
• Suitors, led by
Amphinomus, plot to kill
Telemachus upon his
arrival to the castle.
– The way Amphinomus
justifies the murder is by
suggesting that the Gods
wish Telemachus to be
murdered
