Espaol IV Room 245 Course Description:

Sra. Hayden-Parra desiree.hayden-parra@apseagles.org

Spanish IV is a continuation of the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) introduced in Spanish I, II, and III. Oral and listening proficiency will be the focus. Students will continue to increase their awareness of the customs, arts, literature, history, and geography associated with Spanish speaking countries. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to comprehend spoken Spanish, develop and use vocabulary for practical, everyday use, speak with sufficiently correct pronunciation to be understood, read and write paragraphs, and discuss and be sensitive to relevant aspects of Hispanic culture. Textbook: Avancemos! Level 3 Materials: Three-ring binder/loose-leaf notebook paper OR notebook/folder and writing utensils. In addition, a Spanish-English dictionary is suggested, but not required. Internet: Accessible from the AHS Homepage, the Spanish website contains a wealth of resources for all Spanish students. General Expectations: 1. Be here. Spanish class is not a class that can be taken as an independent study. Many class activities involve pair or group work and listening and oral activities which may not be able to be made up. Absences should be carefully avoided. Additionally, students are expected to be in class and in their assigned seats when the bell rings. Students who are not in the class in their assigned seats when the bell rings will be counted tardy. 2. Be prepared. Bring all materials to class everyday- including any assignments. Practice is essential to learning a foreign language and assignments should already be completed when you arrive to class. 3. Food of any type (this includes candy and gum) and beverages are NOT permitted in the classroom unless planned for a specific class activity. Bottled water is the only exception to this rule.

4. Participate positively. A good attitude will positively influence your development of skills and enjoyment of the class and will contribute to a happier, more comfortable atmosphere for all. 5. Do your own work! Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero (0) for the assignment, quiz, or test. 6. Be responsible about makeup work. If you know in advance that you will miss class for any reason, all daily work, quizzes, or tests must be made up or turned into me before the absence, or at an agreed upon time by you and me before the absence. If you cannot notify me in advance (i.e. illness, emergency, etc.) please see me as soon as you return to school to see what needs to be made up. You will have two (2) school days for each day missed to make up any missed assignments, quizzes, or tests. If you are absent the day(s) immediately before a quiz or test, but you had prior knowledge of the test, you will be required to take the quiz or test as scheduled. If you miss a quiz or test because of an absence from school, you must make up the quiz or test or make arrangements to make up the quiz or test within two school days in order to receive credit. No credit will be given if the quiz or test is not made up or arrangements have not been made according to this timetable. 7. Study every day. Twenty to thirty minutes a day spent reinforcing vocabulary and grammar will greatly influence your skills and move the information into long-term memory. Poco a poco, se va lejos.-Little by little, one goes far. Even ten minutes a day will provide more benefit than zero minutes a day. 8. Class time. In this course, class time will be used for teaching, explanation, guided practice, student participation and interaction, presentations, conversations, and group work. As a general rule, there will not be a study time for students to complete assignments in class. In order to keep up with whats going on in the class, students must be diligent about practicing outside of class what has been learned in class. Additionally, during class time, students are expected to be on task with what were doing in class. Students should not work on assignments from other classes or be distracted by other things such as cell phones, photographs, reading books, makeup, etc. Grading Scale: The Arlington High School grading scale will be utilized as follows: A+.100-98 B+.93-91 C+.85-83 D+.77-75 F69 below A.97-96 B.90-88 C.82-80 D.74-72 A-.95-94 B-.87-86 C-.79-78 D-.71-70
