Protect the Ball away from the Defender

1. ORGANISATION Server with football 10 15 yards away Defenders on cones 5 yards away Receiver starts in the middle

2. MOVE AND GET IN THE LINE OF THE PASS Server passes the ball to the side of the receiver Receiver moves to get in the line of the pass Defender can pressure the receiving player

3. CONTROL AWAY FROM THE DEFENDER AND PROTECT Receiving player controls the ball away from the pressurising defender Receiving player gets their body between ball and the defender to protect it

4. PASS BACK TO SERVER AND REPEAT The receiving player passes the ball back to the server and goes back to the middle start position Defender returns to their cone Repeat

CHALLENGES AND PROGRESSIONS How many times can each receiver successfully control, protect and pass back to the server. Rotate receivers, defenders and servers Servers can chip the ball in the air to test different control surfaces If the server cant chip the ball in the air accurately, they can throw the ball

KEY COACHING Receiving player to be alert and on their toes, ready to move for the pass Get in the line of the ball from the server Select the most appropriate control surface Relax on the touch and control away from the defender Get the body between the ball and the defender to protect the ball Accurate pass back to the server
