The Fourier transform (often abbreviated FT) is an operation that transforms one complex-valued function of a real variable into another. In such applications as signal processing The domain of the original function is typically time and is accordingly called the time domain. The new function itself is called the frequency domain representation because of in which frequencies are present in the original function

The term Fourier transform refers both to The frequency domain representation of a function

and to the process or formula that "transforms" one function into the other.
The Fourier transform and its generalizations are the subject of Fourier analysis. The process of decomposing a function into simpler pieces is often called Fourier analysis rebuilding the function from these pieces is known as Fourier synthesis In mathematics, the term Fourier analysis often refers to the study of both operations. The decomposition process itself is called a Fourier transform.

Types of Fourier transform.

Continuous Fourier transform Term Fourier transform refers to the transform of functions of a continuous real argument, such as time (t) describes a function (t)

Discrete-Time Fourier transform (DFT) The discrete-time Fourier transform (DTFT) provides a useful frequency-domain transform. A useful "discrete-time" function can be obtained by sampling a "continuous-time" function, s(t)

In terms of ordinary frequency , the Fourier transform is given by the can be obtained by looking at one complex number: period of the periodic function:

The DTFT is also equivalent to the Fourier transform of a July "continuous" function 4 Monday, 22, 2013 that is constructed by using the s[n] sequence
