Experiment: Absorption of Digested Food Aim: To show the absorption of glucose through a Visking tube Hypothesis: Glucose can

pass through a Visking tube. Variables: Constant: Time, temperature and Visking tube Manipulated: Presence of starch or glucose Responding: Presence of glucose in distilled water

Boiling Tube A: Visking tube contains starch Boiling Tube B: Visking tube contains glucose Observation: Boiling Tube A Food Test Iodine test Benedicts test B Iodine test Benedicts test Beginning of Experiment End of Experiment Starch absent Glucose absent Starch absent Glucose present

Brown Starch absent Brown solution solution Blue solution Glucose Blue solution absent Brown Starch absent Brown solution solution Blue solution Glucose Red-orange absent precipitate

Discussion: 1. The Visking tube tube represents the small intestine and the distilled water represents the bloodstream. 2. The starch molecules are too big to pass through the Visking tube into the boiling tube. 3. The distilled water tested positive for glucose after 30 minutes. 4. This shows that glucose can pass through the Visking tube into the distilled water in the boiling tube. 5. Glucose can pass through the Visking tube into the distilled water because its molecules are very small. Conclusion: Glucose can pass through the Visking tube. Starch cannot do so.
