New beach website available

With hot weather forecasted for the remainder of the week, Milwaukee County Parks, in partnership with the Sea Grant Institute and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, has announced a new one-stopshop beach website at milwcountybeaches.org. This website gives our beach users all the information they need to decide to come out to the beachfrom the weather forecast to the UV index and more, said John Dargle, Parks Director. Weather forecast, nearshore marine forecast, and information on wind, air-quality, the UV index, and bacterial monitoring are updated on the website as information becomes available on government monitoring sites. While some measures such as airquality and the UV index apply to the general Milwaukee area, bacterial monitoring is beach-specific. Milwaukee County Parks beaches are Bradford, Bay View, Bender, Tietjen (Doctors Park), Grant, McKinley, and South Shore. Information on Shorewoods Atwater Park Beach and Whitefish Bays Klode Park Beach are also included on the website. With sunbathing, sand volleyball, soccer, beach yoga and other out-of-the-water activities, Milwaukee County's beaches are a popular destination even on days when swimming is not advised. The broad range of on-shore activities is a real testament to the commitment of the Milwaukee County Parks to provide opportunities to enjoy Lake Michigan, said Gene Clark, PE and Coastal Engineering Specialist of the UW Sea Grant Institute. In our surveys of beach patrons in the Milwaukee area, we were a bit surprised to find that only a few mentioned water quality as a reason they might not visit a beach. Most said there are many other reasons to visit the Milwaukee beaches besides the water activities. The new website is funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and designed by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the Milwaukee County Parks.
