School Board OKS robotics course

The Germantown School Board approved
a robotics program at the high school Oct.
26.
The course will begin at the high school
next year.
"Everybody on the board knows I love the
sound of this course," board member Michael
Loth said as he asked the instructors to
explain the course.
Teacher Jon Stachowiak said one of the
reasons behind the proposal is that robotics
is taught at the middle school level through
the Project Lead the Way program. However,
there is no follow up for the middle school
students at the high school level.
"(Techonlogy Education Chair Tim
Mehring) and I have been in discussion of
what we would want tech ed to look like in
the future, and how we want to incorporate
this course and some other courses that we'll
discuss at a future time," Stachowiak said.
"We thought this is an appropriate course
for what can extend from the middle
school."
Mehring added that they would want to
make it so the course is online and accessible to any student from any location. He said
the students would sign up through the
Canvass learning management system and
are then enrolled in the course. He then dis-

played several units and activities. He said

assignments could range from writing engineering thoughts to undertaking different
projects. Once students go through the engineering notebook, there will be a discussion
of what robotics actually entails.
Mehring said there will be drafting of
items and the math and physics or robotics
will be discussed.
Stachowiak said there will also be an
effort to incorporate team teaching with
math, science and English teachers in portions of the course.
According to information provided to the
School Board, the budget is $12,000 for start
up and $200 for yearly costs.
Superintendent Jeff Holmes added that
there have been discussions with the First
Robotics League, which has led to discussions with Rockwell and GE about the district robotics program.
At the start of discussion, School Board
member Bruce Warnimont said under district
policy the course should actually begin in
the 2017-18 school year, as the policy states
that new course proposals should be
approved during the spring. Warnimont said
the board should look at that policy and
others "because they do not fit today."

UW-WC Celebrates Veterans Day

Student Veterans Club to host event
The Student Veterans Club at UWWashington County (UW-WC) is making plans to commemorate Veterans
Day on Wednesday, November 11, with
a ceremony that begins at noon in the
campus theatre. All area veterans and
their families, as well as the general
public are welcome to attend. No reservations are needed. A soup and sandwich lunch will be served by the
Veterans Club, following the ceremony
(while supplies last). The 40-minute
presentation includes a presentation
of colors, provided by the local VFW
and a keynote address by Mark
Baldwin. Baldwin has served as
Washington County Veterans Service
Officer since 1995. He served in both
the U.S. Marine Corps (1971-1975) as a
Sergeant and in the U.S. Army (19761992) as a Sergeant First Class. A grad-

The history of Veterans Day

Veterans Day has taken on a new
meaning for many Americans since
September 11 and the beginning of the
conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Only
a few years ago, many Americans did
not know an individual who had been
in active combat duty in the last 20
years. After the Vietnam War, the military became much less valued and much
less popular in the mainstream culture,
but, today, all veterans are honored for
their service on Veterans Day.
The first Armistice Day celebration
took place in 1919 and marked the first
anniversary of the Armistice. Thirty
states made it a legal holiday and
President Woodrow Wilson led the fes-

tivities. Armistice Day was made a federal holiday in 1938, making it one of
the most recent holidays in America.
The name was officially changed to
Veterans Day with legislation proposed
in 1953.
Unlike religious and secular holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving,
there are very few official celebrations
of Veterans Day in America, although
this too is rapidly changing as more
veterans return from Iraq and
Afghanistan. If you are interested in
establishing your own traditions, there
are many things you can do. Most cities
will have some memorial for soldiers

lost in war, and laying flowers or

remembering soldiers that you have
known is a good option. While there are
active service men and women in the
field, you might consider sending a care
package or just a thank-you card to a
soldier. You can even discuss the history of the holiday and American military
involvement with your children.
Most holidays in the United States
have been moved to Mondays to create
a long weekend. The same was done for
Veterans Day, but veterans groups
protested and it was moved back to the
traditional date of November 11. Most

groups thought it would raise the profile of the holiday, but it has, in fact,
had the opposite effect. While more
people are observing the holiday in
recent years, most businesses do not
close for the day. Only government
offices and banks are closed. Official
ceremonies center on the Tomb of the
Unknowns in Arlington National
Cemetery in Washington, D.C. A color
guard from all branches of the military
patrols the site through the night, a
presidential wreath is laid and Taps is
played over the grave.
Veterans Day is both a state and a
federal holiday in all states. It coincides

with international celebrations of

Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in
other parts of the world. The holiday is
observed on November 11 because
major hostilities in World War I were
ended formally at 11 a.m. on the 11th
day of November, the 11th month, in
1918 when Germany signed the
Armistice at the Versailles Palace in
Paris. Veterans Day has a different focus
than Memorial Day, as Veterans Day is
intended to honor and thank the living
veterans in the United States for their
service and to acknowledge their contributions to American society.

STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET

LOCAL RUNNERS
COMPETE

Germantown boys 12th; top 40

finishes for Hamilton, Falls runners
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown boys cross country team finished

12th in Division I competition at the state cross country meet held in Wisconsin Rapids Oct. 31.
Germantown was led by Craig Reese, who fininished 42nd in team competition and 65th overall with
a time of 17:06.64. He was followed by teammates
Jacob DuFrane (45th team, 68th overall, 17:07.01),
Jake Garvey (53rd team,83rd overall,17:14.01), Dylan
Ayer (68th team, 101st overall, 17:21.74) and Evan
Adair (102nd team, 149th overall, 17:48.67). Also
running for Germantown were Westin Feltz (129th
team, 179th overall, 18:18.06) and Joe Biesel (130th
team, 180th overall, 18:18.13).
"Coming to the state meet to compete is the big
takeaway we can come from here. It's not like any
other race we've run this season," Germantown boys
cross country Coach Harris Jones said.
The meet was run in a steady rain that continued
through the second last race of the day, the Division
2 boys race. The rain had ended by the time the
Division I boys race started, but the course was still
wet.
Jones added the downhill portion of the course
after the second mile was "pretty rough" but the team
talked through race strategy and were aware of it.
"I think they responded well as best we could with
the way they tried to position themselves," Jones
said.
Jones said that only two members of the team previously raced on the course, and that was a few years
ago.
"Just a very new experience for a lot of our racers
and especially new experience at a meet as competitive as this," Jones said.
Jones said he was hoping for a better result "but
ultimately we made it here to state and we're looking
to the future to obviously be back here. Take this as a
learning experience and take the positives we can
from it."
The Germantown girls team finished 14th in the
Division I race. Germantown was led by Sami Stieve,
who finished 43rd in the team competition and 64th
overall with a time of 19:59.16. She was followed by
Alyssa Goesch (50th team, 75th overall, 20:10.94),
Jennifer Lindgren (59th team, 99th overall,
20:32.86), Calli Lemke (68th team, 109th overall,
20:43.09) and McKenna Klopfer (96th team, 144th
overall, 21:02.82). Also running for Germantown were
Molly Baus (131st team, 181st overall, 22:09.14) and
Lydia Boyd (134st team, 184th overall, 22:19.57.)
Among individual runners, Rachel Jeffers of
Hamilton finished 31st in the Division I giris race with

a time of 19.42.44 while Kylee

Wunschel of Menomonee Falls
finished 35th with a time of
19.44.66. In the boys Division I
race, Michael Swope of
Hamilton finished 70th with a
time of 17:08.82.
"It was really fast, it was so
fast," Wunschel said a short
time after the race was completed.
Wunschel said she was
pleased with the result.
"I did not think I was going
to be here (at the start of the
season) but I'm glad I'm here.
It was a crazy experience,"
she said.
Menomonee Falls Coach Tom
Shannon praised Wunschel for
her showing at the meet.
"The rain conditions did
affect all the runners because
the course was very wet but
Kylee handled it very well. It
affected warm-ups because you
want to keep dry but she ran
an outstanding race. It was a
gutsy performance on a dismal
day weather wise," Shannon
said. "For a first timer at the
meet, she ran outstanding. It
was one of her better times of
the year on arguably the
toughest course we've run on.
She should be happy and proud
of her achievements."
Hamilton Coach Stephen
Schmidt praised his runners.
He said Jeffers "ran very smart.

Germantown's Max Keefe records a dig against Arrowhead in a sectional semifinal

Nov. 3.

BOYS VOLLETBALL

Germantown wins
playoff opener
History did not repeat itself during
a Division I boys volleyball sectional
semi-final at Germantown High School
Nov. 3, as Germantown rallied to close
out a fourth game and defeat
Arrowhead, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 26-24.
"It was pretty much what we
expected out of it.They were going to
come in, serve as aggressive as any
other high school team, if not more
aggressive than every other team,"
Germantown Coach Brian Rushmer said
of Arrowhead afterward. "They live and
die by it, they almost had us. It's pretty much what we expected."
Germantown
held
the
lead
throughout the first game and held a
21-16 lead following a kill by Logan
Reindl. While Arrowhead got with in
three points, an Arrowhead serve into
the net closed the game for
Germantown.
In the second game Germantown
opened up a 9-2 lead following a kill by
Bryce Thomas and lead 17-9 following a
kill by Max Keefe. But Arrowhead
scored the next four points and trailed
22-19 after an attempted Germantown
kill went into the net. But Germantown
scored the next two points and closed
the second game on an ace.
Arrowhead rallied in the third
game. After the teams were tied 21-21,
Arrowhead scored the next two points
to lead 23-21. A Keefe kill made the
score close, but Arrowhead finished off
the game to keep their season alive.
Arrowhead then held a lead
throughout the fourth game, as
Germantown kept playing catch up.
Arrowhead took a 24-21 lead on a kill
by Riley Voss but the next Arrowhead
serve went into the net. Germatown
then scored the next three points to
close the set and advance to a sectional final matchup against North Shore
Conference rival Nicolet at Homestead

High School Nov. 5.

"One point is pretty big when you
get to this point in the season,"
Arrowhead Coach Shane Reid said
afterward.
Rushmer said he was confident his
team could rally to close out of the
fourth game.
"At this point in time our guys are
calm when the score is anything -could be 0-0 or 24-24, we're still going
to play the same," Rushmer said.
Keefe sparked the Germantown run
in the fourth game, scoring four
straight points for Germantown to keep
the team in the game while leading
Germantown with 26 kills for the
match. Rushmer noted that before the
fourth game other Germantown coaches heard Keefe go to Reindl and asked
to "feed me" the ball.
"That's the first time all year anybody has really told Logan they want
the ball, they need the ball. That's
awesome," Rushmer said.
The victory by Germantown was a
reversal of last year, when Arrowhead
upset Germantown in sectional semifinal. Rushmer said both teams are different from the seasons but he did note
that when Arrowhead beat Cedarburg
on Oct. 30 members of last year's team
saw the sectional semifinal matchup as
a chance from redemption from last
year.
"They came in here the same game
as last year and took us out and we
knew we didn't want that to happen
again," senior Max Keefe said.
He then added that "when you're
the one seed you don't want to lose the
first game you play.We saw how the
seniors were in that last game and me
being a senior now, for sure we don't
want that to happen again."

The

The support of BMO Harris as our

said Deb Stresing, president of GCSF.
BMO Harris show of support for our

this years event theme states.
Proceeds from the GCSF Annual

sponsors of this event through their
item donations for raffles, and silent
