Village Board places

Fire Department referendum
on November ballot
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Germantown Village Board
approved a resolution to place a referendum on the Nov. 3 ballot that
would allow the Germantown Fire
Department to become a full-time
operation.
The referendum will seek support
of voters to exceed the village tax
levy by 14.4 percent, or $1,607,756
over the most recent levy.
According to information in village documents, the village is currently served by four full-time and four
part-time staff, with the rest of the
department being "paid-on-call" staff
that respond to specific incidents.
After the meeting, Fire Chief Gary
Weiss said the department is running
110 calls above the same period last
year.
He cited a situation during the
afternoon of Aug. 2 where there
were five calls within 15 minutes "that
stretched us so thin it was crazy. We
had to call for mutual aid because
we ran out of people."
That situation included a structure
fire at the Germantown Little League
complex, in which the Cedarburg Fire

Department provided assistance.

If approved, the referendum
would allow the department to have
a total of 16 full time-staff and provide 24/7 coverage to residents.
Weiss said the staff would include a
full-time fire chief, assistant fire
chief/training officer, three shifts of
four full-time firefighters and two fulltime fire inspectors.
Weiss later added that if the referendum question is approved, the
department could upgrade to a paramedic service and increase revenues,
as higher service would charge higher fees.
"This helps to get it in place faster
but could also be done without a referendum on step-by-step basis,"
Village President Dean Wolter said
during the meeting. "It isn't the only
vehicle that would make it occur but it
is allowing for it to occur along with
full time staff."
After the meeting, Weiss said the
department has most of the equipment needed to upgrade to paramedic service, but that it would be a
matter of upgrading medications.

CMH first to hold accreditation in all

diagnostic, radiation oncology disciplines
Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin Cancer Network at Community
Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, is
one of the first and only practices in the
United States to be awarded accreditation
in all diagnostic and radiation oncology
disciplines and receive designation as a
Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence
as a result of reviews by the American
College of Radiology (ACR).
Radiology accreditation is held by
Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin Cancer Network at Community
Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls, in
the following disciplines: Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI), computerized
tomography (CT), nuclear medicine &
positron emission tomography (PET), breast
stereotactic biopsy, breast MRI, breast CT
and breast ultrasound imaging. They also
participate in the ACR General Radiology
Improvement Database (GRID) and the
Dose Index Registry (DIR). Accredited
since 1995, the radiation oncology program was awarded a new three-year
accreditation term in early July.

ACR accreditation represents the pinnacle of radiologic imaging and radiation

oncology quality. These intensive, external
third-party review processes involve comprehensive evaluation of program structure
and outcomes, as well as validation of
excellence among staff, technology, policies and procedures, safety practices, and
quality assessment and improvement practices. Designation by the ACR reflects on
the longstanding commitment to excellence
by Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin. These voluntary ACR programs exist to help ensure patients have
access to high quality and safe radiologic
procedures and patient care.
The American College of Radiology is
a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and
medical physicists with programs focusing
on the practice of medical imaging and
radiation oncology and the delivery of
comprehensive health care services.

Fire Department referendum on November ballot

From page 1
dum question on the ballot was approved
by a 6-1 vote, with Trustee Art Zabel voting
against the question. Trustees David Baum
and Rick Miller were not present.
"The only issue I have is I think we can
work it out within our budget without going
to referendum," Zabel said.
Trustee Terri Kaminski said the board
has had many discussions over the past several months about placing the item on the
ballot for residents to consider.
"I totally support letting them decide,"
Kaminski said.
She then asked Zabel how he thought
a full time department could be funded
within the current budget.
Wolter responded that going from the
current status of the Fire Department to a

full-time department "really can't be

reached without this referendum and I'm in
support of letting residents have a say.
We've discussed it and have looked at it
many different ways, we've haven't had a
way to come up with it, to wholly fund a
full-time department to that level. We've
looked at ways of weekend staffing, we've
looked at ways to do it incrementally, but
we haven't found a way to put it in place as
a full-time time, 24/7 (operations). This is
the only avenue and the only vehicle that
does that. It gives the residents the power to
decide if this is something they want or if
this something they want to put back on us
to figure out."
Zabel said that as a result of new construction, the village will be able to raise
the current levy by $667,000 as a result of
the growth provision under the levy limit.

He said that compares with around

$200,000 and $300,000 on an annual
basis.
"So you do have additional monies
available this year so that if you choose to
ramp it up, you can do it," Zabel said.
Wolter replied that in the past the
Village Board has been in a position to
increase the tax levy by 3 percent but has
chosen not to increase the levy by the full
amount allowed. He added that the village
would be facing increases in insurance this
year.
After the meeting, Weiss said the
department will provide the public with the
general information regarding the referendum question.
Background: After the meeting, Weiss
said fire department responses with a paidon-call fire operation can be problematic,

especially at night. For paid-on-call staff,

they are on call every other week, which
means they cannot drink alcohol or leave
the village, but have to remain available
for a call. If there are no calls, they have
made no money.
He added that the paid-on-call fire service nationwide "is suffering across the
board, everywhere."
He explained that with smaller "mom
and pop" businesses in the past, bosses
would let their employees respond to a
call. Now with larger businesses and industry, they can't afford to let their employees
respond because of the impact it will have
their workplace.
"That small-knit community stuff is kind
of waning away in your suburban communities, and we're pretty much a suburban
community right now," Weiss said.

Dheinsville renovations near completion

Renovations to the Christ Church
Museum in northern Germantown are
wrapping up.
The church is located at the northwest
corner of where Division Road, Holy Hill
Road and Fond du Lac Avenue meet. It is
part of the Dheinsville Historic Park site.
Jeff Dhein, president of the
Germantown Historical Society, said the
work has included re-roofing the steeple,
lighting up the cross on the steeple,
installing inside lighting for the stained
glass windows for the steeple, adding a

footing to the steps and then re-installing

the original steps (which were originally
placed on gravel), removing a silver maple
tree nearby and installing air conditioning
in the church.
Contractors for the project included
Jackson Hardware and Heating, Noffke
Roofing, and Guenther Contracting. Dhein
added that Riteway Bus Company contributed to the roof installation on the
steeple while Bill Wetterau donated funds
for the re-lighting of the cross. The society
also used operating funds for work on the

stained glass while the Dix family donated

funds for re-stalling the steps. Grass is also
now being re-sodded at the site.
Dhein estimated the cost for the project
would have come in at just under

$100,000 but noted that the society

received donations for 75 to 80 percent of
the work.

School Board approves

co-curricular handbook
The Germantown School Board
approved the co-curricular handbook July
27.
During brief discussion on the handbook, board member Bruce Warnimont
asked if individuals who participate in cocurricular activities are subject to random
drug testing. Athletics and Activities
Director Jack Klebesadel said random
drug testing is not included in the handbook, and noted that the testing is "awfully
costly."
Warnimont noted that the Muskego district has drug testing for co-curricular participants and will make it a prerequisite for
allowing students to park on school property.
Superintendent Jeff Holmes added that
in the two years he has been in the district,
when the Police Department K-9 officer has
come through the school, there has not

been a situation where police have had to

interview a student.
"You hear about so many problems in
so many other schools, Germantown is not
as bad as other places," Holmes said. "You
always get better at it, but it's one of those
things where I greatly appreciate where
Germantown is already. I just had to say
that."
Warnimont added that "nine times out
of 10 the entire student population knows
what's going to be happening."
Board President Robert Soderberg
added there have been fewer expulsion
hearings this past year than previous years.
"From the increased awareness the
administration does at the high school, the
efforts of (Germantown Police Officer Toni
Olson ," I think it's a pretty good package," Soderberg said.

Scleroderma walk Sunday, Aug. 16

The 7th Annual "Stepping Out to Cure
Scleroderma" walk in Germantown, will be
held on Sunday, Aug. 16.
This annual walk raises money for the
Scleroderma Foundation, Greater Chicago
Chapter, which provides support, education
and research for scleroderma patients.
Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive,
autoimmune disease in which the immune
system attacks its own body. The disease can
cause thickening and tightening of the skin.
In some cases it causes serious damage to
internal organs including the heart, lungs,
kidneys, esophagus and gastrointestinal
tract. These organs may slowly harden until
they become ineffective. Some treatments
can help
with certain symptoms, but there is still
no cure for scleroderma. The disease affects
three to four times as many women as men.
"Some friends and I started this fundraiser six years ago after a childhood friend had
passed away from the disease and my best
friend from high school had been diagnosed," said Michele Fuchs, Senior Account
Executive for Entercom Milwaukee and
Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma committee member. "Were very pleased with the
community support weve received. Last
year was our best year ever with 400 walkers and were hoping to get even more people to the walk this year!"
The walk will take place at Kinderberg
Park, N104W14942 Donges Bay Road,
Germantown. Registration will start at 7:30
a.m. and the walk will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The event will take place rain or shine. The
cost is $20 per walker. Children under 12
walk for free. The day includes food, music,
t-shirts, raffle prizes and activities for families. Dogs are welcome. Register for the1- or

3-mile walk online at scleroderma.org/steppingoutgermantown. Advanced online registration is recommended, but participants
may also register in person the day of the
walk. For more information or to request a
