SystemicLupusErythematosus

Systemiclupuserythematosus,(alsoknownasLupusorSLE)isachronicinflammatory autoimmuedisordercharacterizedbyperiodicepisodesofinflammationofanddamagetothe joints,tendons,andorgans,includingtheheart,lungs,bloodvessels,brain,kidneys,andskin. InanautoimmunedisorderlikeSLE,aperson'santibodiesbegintorecognizethebody'sown tissuesasforeign.Cellsandchemicalsoftheimmunesystemdamagethetissuesofthebody. Thereactionthatoccursintissueiscalledinflammation.Inflammationincludesswelling, redness,increasedbloodflow,andtissuedestruction. SLEcanoccurinbothmalesandfemalesofallages,but90%ofpatientsarewomenintheir childbearingyears.Lupusaffectseachindividualdifferentlyandtheeffectsoftheillnessrange frommildtosevere.Patientsmayhaveperiodswithmildornosymptoms,followedbyaflare. Duringaflare,symptomsincreaseinseverityandneworgansystemsmaybecomeaffected. AlmostallpeoplewithSLEhavejointpainandmostdeveloparthritis.Frequentlyaffectedjoints arethefingers,hands,wrists,andknees.Lupuscanpotentiallybefatal. CurrenttreatmentofSLEisaimedatlimitingtheprogressionofthediseasewhilelesseningthe severityofepisodes. SymptomsofSystemicLupusErythematosus Fever Fatigue Musclepain GeneralMalaise Decreasedappetiteandweightloss Abdominalpain,nausea,andvomiting Jointpainandproblems,includingarthritis Coughandchestpain(Pleurisy) Enlargedglands Skinrasharedbutterflyshapedskinrashappearsacrossthecheeksandnose,andrashes elsewhereonthebody Increasedsensitivitytosunlight HairLoss(alopecia)
