Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes arthritis of the spine, and other large joints. It causes persistent pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. In some cases the bones in the spine may fuse together, resulting in a rigid spine and leading to a stooped-over posture. There is no cure of AS; the goal of treatment is to reduce pain, prevent deformities and improve function.
