TO THE UNITED STATES

(1) The United States is a nation that has been populated by immigrants from all over the world. Even the Native Americans, whose history here began approximately 20,000 years ago, originally came to this continent from Asia. (2) Immigration is often a confusing, frightening experience, so strong motivation is required for people to leave the lands where they have lived to come to a place about which they have little or no knowledge. There have been many factors that have led to individual decisions to immigrate, the most significant of which are religious freedom, political freedom, and economic opportunity. However, other people came here because they were forced to. (3) Many of the earliest immigrants of the colonial era came to this land with the hope that they would find the freedom to worship God as they wished. These groups included the English Puritans, who colonized Massachusetts, and the Society of Friends, who established themselves in Pennsylvania. Later in American history, Jews, who were persecuted in several lands, came to many of the eastern states. Even today we find Jews who seek religious freedom emigrating from the Soviet Union to the United States. For these and other groups, the freedom of choice in religious worship, which is guaranteed in the Billof Rights of the American Constitution, has held great promise. (4) The dream of political freedom, too, has long attracted many groups. During the long battle for the liberation and unification of the Italian Peninsula, for example, many of the fighters for unification, the most famous of whom was Giuseppe Garibaldi, who is known as the "Father of Italy," came to the United States during the times when it would have been too dangerous for them to remain in Italy. Garibaldi lived on Staten Island, New York, for several years until he could safely return to Italy and complete his political mission. In more recent years, we have seen the 'arrival of hundreds of thousands of Hungarians, Ukrainians, Cubans, Vietnamese, Laotians, and others who felt it necessary to leave some political system behind for a variety

(5) The most significant reason for immigration to the United States has been the dream of economic mobility. In the years following the American Civil War until the 1920's, when millions of people arrived in the United
