5: FORMULAS
Objectives: Find the value of the variable in a formula given replacements for the other variables. Solve a formula for one of its variables. Find the supplement and complement of an angle. Solve simple percent problems.

Definition
In mathematics, formula is an equation that contains more than one variable.

Perimeter of a Rectangle
Example: Problem Set 2.5 1.) Use the formula P = 2L + 2W to find the length of a rectangular lot if the width is 50 feet and the perimeter P is 300 feet.

P = 2L + 2W P 2W = 2L 2 2

P 2W = 2L PW=L 2 L = 100 feet

Substitute the given values, L=PW L = 300 - 50 2 2

Equation with Fractions

Example: Problem Set 2.5 5b.) For the equation y = -1 x + 2, find x when y is 3. 3

1x=2y 3 x = 6 3y

(3)1 x = 3(2 y) 3

Substitute the given values, x = 6 3y x = 6 3(3)

x=69
x = -3

Equation with Fractions

Example: Problem Set 2.5 15a.) If y = K, find K if x 5 and y is 4. x

y =K x K = xy

(x)y = K(x) x

Substitute the given values, K = xy K = 5(4)

K = 20

Solve each equation for the indicated variable.

Example: Problem Set 2.5 19.) V = lwh for h

V = lwh lw lw

h=V lw h - 16t2 = v t

31.) h = vt + 16t2 for v

h-

16t2

= vt

h-

16t2 t

= vt t

Solve each equation for the indicated variable.

Example: Problem Set 2.5 33.) A = r2 + 2 rh for h

A-

r2

= 2 rh

A - r2 = 2 rh 2 r 2 r

A - r2 = h 2 r
39a.)Solve for y, y 1 = 3 x 5
y 1 = 3(x) 5 (x)(y 1) = 3(x) x 5 y=3x+1 5

Translate each of the following into an equation, and then solve that equation.
Problem Set 2.5 51.) What number is 25% of 40? 0.25(40) = 40

n = 10

57.) What percent of 40 is 14?

40n = 14 n = 14 = 0.35 or 35% 40 0.12n = 240 n = 240 = 2000 0.12

61.) 240 is 12% of what number?
