Ceremony Awards $25,000 Grants in D.C. WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 Be Aware Inc. announced plans to host a ceremony awarding grants to various community development programs at Busboys & Poets in support of some of its youth-based initiatives. CEO Laura Habberstadt aims to raise $50,000 over the next year to double the grant totals handed out at Busboys 5th & K location from this past year. Owner of U St. Caf, Ronald Cleveland, pledged $2,000 to support the efforts. I want these youngsters to think of Washington the way I thought of it. I want them to be able to walk down the street and think that this is my D.C., and its the gateway to a world full of opportunity, said Mr. Cleveland when asked about his contributions. Mr. Cleveland has gone above an beyond the call of duty for these kids in and around Washington. I am asking that all those in a position of help come out, assume your responsibilities in the community alongside Mr. Cleveland, and put the work in to develop these kids, said D.C. Councilmember Vincent Orange. The number of kids under the age of 18, arrested, and charged with violent crimes rose by 10 percent in D.C. last year. Burglary arrests of juveniles spiked 90 percent, while thefts shot up 173 percent. Typically, the police chief calls on the rank and file for an all hands on deck approach. Well, this is our all hands on deck. So dress up, come out, enjoy some great food and build with Be Aware and the citizens of Washington, said Delegate Eleanor Holms Norton. Be Aware Incorporated was one of the first benefit corporations established in the United States. Benefit corporations are for-profit entities that must also have a social objective, one in which profits, people and the planet are regarded equally. To achieve this triple bottom line objective, Be Aware develops branded environmentally responsible items that are marketed and sold in cooperation with non-profit, community-based and municipal organizations who share in the profits.
