THE PRESERVATION OF JOGYAKARTAS CULTURAL TRADEMARK : ANDHONG

Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) is a province in Indonesia which is Jogja as its capital city. Jogja, as a central of DIY has a lot of predicates. One of them is Jogja as a cultural city. That predicate given because Yogyakarta has many potentials such as tradition, history, and heritage. Culture is the result of creativity, taste, and values of human beings. According to Jan Aart Scholtoc, globalization is the spread of western modernity structures including capitalism, rationalism, industrialism and bureaucracy that tend to destroy the existing local culture. (Agenda Bangsa Selamatkan Indonesia page 14) Globalization is a major threat for the cultural development. Culture which is a reflection of the local community may lose because of globalization. But although this is a globalization era, there are many cultural products that are still maintained in Jogja as a cultural city. One of them is andhong, which is the traditional transportation that has been there since Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII era. Andhong at Sultan Hamengkubuwono X era is a replica of the golden carriage that is only used for a blueblooded class. But at the time of Sultan HB VIII, andhong can be used for the public until today (tempo.com) Andhong, which is the local cultural heritage still exists today in this globalization era is an attracting phenomenon. But, if there are no preservations for Andhong as Jogjas trademark, it will be a history. I believe that were all as Jogjas citizens must preserve andhong for several reasons.
