Our Planned Location

ENCORE Academy has submitted a letter of intent to the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) to purchase the John A. Shaw building located at 2518 Arts Street.

Today our letter of intent was accepted by the OPSB Budget and Finance Committee. Their recommendation of acceptance will go before the full board at the OPSB meeting next week.
The property is located in the 7th Ward in what is known as the North St. Roch neighborhood. The neighborhood and block surrounding the school is one of renewal. First time home buyers are moving into the area. One of our ENCORE Academy board members, Ms. Kesana Durand, and her husband live about a block away from the school, and Miss Sonya, our School Operations Manager, recently purchased a home in the neighborhood.

Renovation or New Building?

After a preliminary look at the site, it was recommended that the building be demolished and and a new facility be constructed. The school had approximately six feet of water in the building following Katrina, and there was a fire at one time which damaged the roof. If the building is to be found to have no structural damage and a renovation can be completed to match our timeline, the building will undergo a full renovation to meet our enrollment needs and accommodate our academic and exploratory arts program. In the event that the recommendation is to demolish the building, a plan for new facility construction will follow.
